Avalon and Stone Harbor sit side by side on Seven Mile Island, sharing the same long, wide beaches and a similar unhurried feel. You don't have to choose between them — from 24 Ocean, both are easy to enjoy in a single week.
Avalon has the small boardwalk and a livelier stretch of dining and shops along Dune Drive, with a relaxed, family-friendly feel. Stone Harbor is a little quieter, with a compact boutique downtown along 96th Street. The two towns share beaches and honor each other's beach tags, so you can move freely between them.
The island is flat and easy to bike, and it's a short drive from 24th Street down to Stone Harbor's downtown. Many guests spend most of their time on the Avalon beaches and make a trip or two down-island for dinner or shopping.
At the south end of the island, the Wetlands Institute and the nearby bird sanctuary are a nice change of pace from the beach, especially with kids or on a cooler morning.
If you want the beach plus a boardwalk and a bit more going on, Avalon is a natural home base. If you're drawn to a quieter downtown for an evening out, Stone Harbor is a few minutes away. With both on one island, most families end up enjoying a little of each.
