Avalon is an easy, low-key beach town on Seven Mile Island. Most days here revolve around the beach and the bay, with a small boardwalk and plenty of ways to get out on the water when you want a change of pace. Here are the basics to build a week around.
The 24th Street beach is right at the houses — a short, flat walk with the beach chairs that come with your rental. It's a guarded beach in season, so it's an easy spot to settle in for the day. See the beaches guide for tags and lifeguard hours.
Avalon's boardwalk is small and family-friendly, clustered around the upper 20s and 30s streets. You'll find an arcade, a playground, a skate park, and the usual ice cream and pizza stops — an easy after-dinner walk with kids.
Pirate Island Golf is the local favorite for a round of mini-golf, and a good rainy-evening or after-beach activity for all ages.
The back bay is calm and great for paddling. You can rent kayaks and stand-up paddleboards by the hour on the bay, or bring your own and launch from Avalon's public Kayak Park. For something faster, there's sailing, jet-skiing, and boating, and the Avalon Sport Fishing Center and Moran's Dockside are the places to grab bait and tackle or book a fishing charter.
The island is flat and compact, which makes biking the easiest way to get around — to the beach, into town, or down-island to Stone Harbor. Most weeks it's worth renting bikes for the whole group.
The Avalon History Center tells the story of Avalon and Seven Mile Island, and is a pleasant, quick stop on an overcast morning.
When the weather turns, the arcade and the shops along Dune Drive are close by, and Cape May and the Wildwoods boardwalk are both short drives if you want a change of scene.
